MEC6411   Tribology of Machine Elements   (10 credits)

Year Running: 2015/2016
Credit level: F7

Description

The course begins by describing geometric (roughness) and material characteristics of surfaces. When two surfaces are pressed together under a load, contact is made at isolated spots. Analysis techniques to estimate contact areas, contact stresses and the resulting material behaviour are also taught. Lubrication (both fluid and solid) and bearing selection are also covered. These concepts are integrated by industrial lectures by using various case studies.
